The Tamil Nadu Wetlands Mission (TNWM) protects and restores wetlands using scientific planning, community involvement, and policy innovation to ensure ecological health and climate resilience.

Implemented by TNGCC with agencies and communities, TNWM integrates wetland conservation into sustainable development at district and state levels, supporting groundwater recharge and biodiversity.

Mission Goals

These goals shape Tamil Nadu’s wetland future—protecting biodiversity, preventing degradation, and fostering community-led stewardship through scientific planning and inclusive action

  • Map and categorize all wetlands across Tamil Nadu
  • Prevent encroachment and pollution in vulnerable wetland areas
  • Develop integrated wetland management plans (IWMPs)
  • Restore ecological functions of degraded wetlands
  • Build awareness and enable community stewardship of wetlands
