Marine Litter Circular Economy (GIZ)

Key Partners: GIZ India, Local Urban Bodies

Start Date: 2020

Circular Economy Solutions Preventing Marine Litter in Ecosystems (CES) and EU-India Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy Initiative (EU-I RECEI)

The CES project focuses on digital systems for tracking, monitoring, and reporting leakages of marine litter while promoting technical solutions to reduce, reuse, and recycle (3R) plastics. It supports the implementation of national Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework, including measures related to the Single-Use Plastics (SUP) ban. The project financed by German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN), co-financed by the European Union (EU) since 2024, is implemented with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), GoI. Building on the experience of CES project in Tamil Nadu, the EU-IRECEI—co-financed by the EU and BMUKN—extends this collaboration to promote circular economy practices across sectors, including textiles, in partnership with MoEFCC and the Ministry of Textiles. Both projects are implemented jointly with the Department of Environment, Climate Change & Forest, Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company and Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.

Current activities majorly include city-cluster assessments for textile waste management and capacity building for selected MSMEs, piloting 3R Centres for textile waste management, facilitating EU-India knowledge exchanges, and strengthening EPR compliance and plastic waste management reporting systems in Tamil Nadu.
