The Retrofitting of Government Buildings initiative is a key programme of the Government of Tamil Nadu aimed at improving the environmental performance, safety, and service quality of public buildings. The initiative seeks to transform government facilities into energy-efficient, resource-responsible, and climate-resilient spaces by strengthening energy management, water conservation, waste handling, ventilation, and indoor environmental quality.
In the initial phase, Stanley Government Hospital and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai were selected for detailed sustainability assessments due to their scale, public importance, and high resource demand. Based on the assessment findings, structured retrofitting measures will be implemented, including energy system upgrades, improved ventilation and lighting, enhanced water efficiency, better biomedical waste management, and healthier indoor environments. This initiative reflects Tamil Nadu’s commitment to sustainable and climate-ready public infrastructure and sets a strong foundation for extending retrofitting efforts to other government buildings across the State.
