The project “Urban Heat Island Assessment and Strategic Guidelines for Urban Cooling in Tamil Nadu,” implemented by ICLEI South Asia with TNGCC, assesses ward-level heat risks across Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, and Tirunelveli. Using a hazard–exposure–vulnerability framework, it identifies urban heat hotspots and vulnerable communities, highlighting links between industrial zones, waste dump sites, and high heat stress. The study provides actionable city- and state-level recommendations for integrating urban cooling into master plans and policies through cool roofs, green and blue infrastructure, and equitable green space distribution, supporting Tamil Nadu’s Climate Change Mission and future urban cooling initiatives.
