The project “Development of City Biodiversity Index of Chennai” aims to assess and enhance Chennai’s urban biodiversity through the globally recognized Singapore Index framework. Covering the entire Greater Chennai Municipal Corporation area, the project involves developing the city’s biodiversity profile, collecting data for 23 indicators, calculating scores, and providing targeted recommendations. The City Biodiversity Index serves as a self-assessment tool to monitor native biodiversity, ecosystem services, and governance performance. This initiative positions Chennai as one of the pioneering Indian cities adopting this international framework, strengthening its biodiversity governance and contributing to improved scores under the Climate Smart Cities Assessment Framework (CSCAF).
