The Coastal Habitat Restoration and Climate Adaptation Initiative is a flagship programme of the Government of Tamil Nadu that strengthens natural coastal ecosystems to protect communities from climate risks. Guided by scientific baseline studies, the initiative focuses on restoring mangroves and other critical habitats vulnerable to erosion, flooding, storm surges, and sea-level rise.

Under the Green Tamil Nadu Mission, 355 hectares of new mangroves have been established using eco-friendly designs, 77,000 mangrove propagules planted in vulnerable stretches, and 650 hectares of degraded mangrove forests restored. By adopting nature-based solutions, the initiative reinforces Tamil Nadu’s commitment to a resilient, sustainable, and climate-adaptive coastline.
