The India Cooling Programme – UNEP Cool Coalition Initiative is a nationwide effort supporting the India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP) by promoting sustainable, low-carbon, and inclusive cooling solutions across 20+ cities in India. The initiative aims to reduce cooling demand, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance resilience to extreme heat through passive cooling in buildings, district cooling systems, nature-based solutions, and sustainable cold-chain development. Implemented with national and state partners—including MoEFCC, NIUA, NDMA, and TNGCC—and supported by technical institutions like CEPT, CARBSE, AEEE, and Auroville, the programme integrates policy development, capacity building, innovative financing, and demonstration projects. Ultimately, it seeks to deliver cooler, energy-efficient, climate-resilient communities for over 600 million people while advancing India’s long-term climate and development goals.
